Wishful Drinking
by Carrie Fisher
by Carrie Fisher
Fisher has had a fascinating life and I was really looking forward to sitting down with this book. That said, given the source material, I thought this could've been a bit better.
A very quick read,Wishful Drinking is certainly entertaining, but it very much comes across as a transcription of Fisher's one woman show of the same name. Those hoping for a right and proper memoir will be quite disappointed. Obvious "laugh lines" that work in a live setting don't always do that well on the printed page. Its wandering anecdotal style--again, working very well as a dialog with a live audience--sometimes misses the mark. Although less consequential for most, grammar nazis will probably be bothered by some of the editing and proofing efforts. (I was rather surprised to see a misspelling of Ozzy Osbourne's name--as "Ozzie," instead--made it all the way to the final printing.
These quibbles aside, I would recommend this book to anyone who has a jones for either Hollywood or survivor stories for substance abuse and mental illness. Fisher's sense of humor is infectious, and wonderful to read.
