Two young lovers, Nate and Sara, are on their way to Reno when they stop for food. They don't have much money and are trying to leave their past behind and start a new life.

A man in the tavern tells them that his car has died and offers $500. if they would drive him to Reno. Uncomfortable with the situation, they look at the money and accept.

On the way, the may appears ill and tells them that there is a woman named Lilith after him.

They are driving through a bad snow storm and pull into a run-down motel when the snow gets worse. Nate and Sara get a room and when Nate comes out to check on the man, Syl, he's unconscious. Nate checks him and sees that he's been shot and has a money belt. Since it appears that Syl is near death, Nate takes the money belt and moves Syl out of the car, not expecting him to live the night.

This noir novel is the kind of story that Alfred Hitchcock was famous for. Everyone is stuck at this out of the way motel while the storm rages.

The various characters come together and learn that Nate has taken a large amount of money from Sly. Greed begins and everyone begins to conspire about how to get their hands on the money.

This is a quick read that would be good for a summer vacation. The action is nicely described and the story is packed with tension. All that's needed is the creepy music to let the reader and characters know that danger lurked in the shadows.
