it was amazing

Having loved McGregor's previous two novels, I started this with eager anticipation. Yes, it is about a depressing subject (as are the others) but forget Trainspotting, this is the best book about junkies ever written. The characters leap off the page, and there's a prevailing note of compassion that's hard to define but is definitely there. I could have done with a slightly stronger note of redemption especially at the end, but perhaps he is right not to sugar coat the subject, and to leave the central mystery of the narrative unsolved. Everyone who works with drug addicts, and perhaps every addict, ought to read this novel.
