Macy - younger of two daughters, the good girl. Still at home after her father dies.
Macy's mother - high-powered real estate person. Had worked with her husband on a community. Truly loved her easy-going husband. Probable guilt over his death, due to pushing for the planned community they were building.
Carolyn - older sister, the wild one. Completed college, married an attorney 10 years her senior. Interior designer.
Jason - brainiac boyfriend of Macy. Cold and controlling. Ick.
Wes - Doesn't every woman want to find a version of Wes? Handsome, sensitive, etc. etc.
Delia - Wes's aunt. Owner of the catering service Macy works for.
Bert - Wes's younger brother. Lovable nerd.
Kristy - an employee of Delia's who becomes Macy's friend. Physically scarred from a childhood accident, she dresses to stand out and is very confident.
Monica - "Monotone" Kristy's sister.

Sarah Dessen continues to impress. The story line was simple - Macy's father died suddenly, unexpectedly, and this is the story of how they cope in the first couple of years. Macy's mom is very straight-laced and controlling, more so since her husband's death. After having something so horrible happen that was outside of her control, she is attempting to control everything else. Macy was her daddy's girl, but she tried hard to be "perfect" for her mother, getting involved with Jason, who is much more concerned with his studies and her studies than with her. Delia caters an event that Macy's mom has for her business and Macy helps her out. Delia tells her that she would hire her in a minute, and ultimately Macy ends up working for her throughout the summer. Wes has also lost a parent, and due to acting out, he spent time in a juvenile detention center. He has straightened his life out and is a talented artist. He and Macy develop a friendship by always playing the game, "Truth." I enjoyed reading about the relationships between these people, and the ultimate uplifting ending.
