Jane Yolen once again delights readers with a touching story of a young girl moved out west by her father after her mother's death. Elsie does not leave the house on the plains because as long as she stays in the house, she can hear the sounds from Boston in her head. She and her canary Timmy Tunes sing back and forth. The canary is the one who finally gets her to leave the house by flying away. Elsie chases him and finally hears the sounds of the prairie.
