Stuff White People Like: A Definitive Guide to the Unique Taste of Millions

The white people referred to in this book are middle- to upper middle-class college-educated white people who probably live on one of the coasts (or Chicago, which also has a coast). The portrayal makes broad generalizations that appear to be spot-on, give or take a few entries. Although the book is tongue-in-cheek it could be a useful guide for a young person of any ethnicity or socioeconomic background who is determined to have the cultural currency of upper middle class taste. As outlined in the book, this taste is often a complicated means of masking deep-seated insecurities, anxiety and guilt. As most white people do not have as strong cultural identities as minorities do, they must carve out an individualistic identity that is frequently a rejection of concepts that are deemed mediocre. This provides the white person with the building blocks of a positive self-image, but it also engenders a climate of competition among white people. This feeling of insecurity is usually in conflict with the white person’s desire for supremacy in any given social situation. Said supremacy is both a salve for the insecurity and, if the white person is self-aware, a direct expression of their self-importance. I highly recommend this book. It is by turns funny, insightful, and, if one thinks about it too deeply, frightening. (There are more hyphens in this review than I’ve used in my entire life before this. And I didn’t even discuss the chapter on white people loving to hyphenate their names!)
