Lifelines (Angels of Mercy, #1)

This is one action-packed book and that's a big part of the problem. The book starts off well with Dr. Lydia Fiore starting her new job as the attending ER physician in the Angels hospital in Pittsburgh. On her first night she successfully resuscitates a teenager - and impresses her new staff - then loses another young man who seemingly should not have died. As though the puzzle and frustration of his death isn't enough, it turns out that he was the son of the chief of neurology who now wants Lydia fired.
This was a good set-up and the fast pace was fun, but the book became a little too broken up and episodic as Lydia rushed from one emergency to the next and takes on skinheads, a cyanide poisoner, riots and a bunch of other things. Adding to the episodic nature were the quick-cuts between what was going on with Lydia and what was going on with three other female members of the staff.
I think the author is aiming for a Grey's Anatomy feel (or the publisher is with the cover), but it began to feel a little like the perils of Pauline by the end and Lydia is a little too good at everything she does as well as in finding an immediate love interest.
All of that being said, I'll definitely read the next book if this is a series because I think a lot of this can be attributed to first-bookitis.
