the two nanas decide to move to tokyo, and end up sitting next to each other on the train. they talk the whole way there, even when the train is delayed by snow. at the train station, they go their separate ways but meet again serendipitously when they are both taken to see the same apartment. after fighting over it, they decide to become roommates and a strange friendship is born...

Joy I can't remember if the Viz edition has cultural notes on this, but "Nana" is a homonym for the number 7 in Japanese. And the apartment they live in is, of course, 707.
