If you want to get into the Star Wars EU (Expanded Universe), Timothy Zahn is a safe bet. The dialogue for the movie characters sounds very... in character, I guess, and the characters he created are very compelling: Thrawn, Pellaeon and Mara Jade, but also the stormtrooper deserters.
Even though this book is the second part to Allegiance, it takes place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, and can be read on its own, even if it's your first SW-EU book.

By the way, the book does NOT have 416 pages... it's got only 355, plus an excerpt from "Riptide"
