Once again, a very readable guilty pleasure. Butcher does an excellent job of keeping characters fresh. He rotates them in and out of each book with aplomb. Murphy was missing from the last book; she returns in this one, but the reader isn’t given the happily ever after that she wants, but she gets what is necessary to keep the tension of the story. I love Dresden, the confused wizard who keeps stumbling, just to get back up again to try to do the right thing. I appreciate that Michael, the Godly man, is treated with respect by Dresden. With all the ugliness in the media about Christian leaders caught in sin, the attitude in many secular circles is to condemn Christians as hypocrites. Dresden looks at a man he doesn’t understand, but he weighs the good in him and finds him to be true. In a series about wizards, black magic, werewolves, vampires, and faeries, it’s refreshing to see good found in friends, family, and faith.
