Tolle offers up a more user-friendly, mass-market follow-up to the "The Power of Now." This easier read earned a spot on Oprah's book list, and admittedly, I reach for this one first when I need my Eckhart fix.

In any case, he continues to illustrate, like only he can, how the ego and a lack of present-moment consciousness sabotage true happiness. As far as life purpose is concerned, he contends that an inner purpose of "being" must be attained before a gratifying outer purpose of "doing" is possible.

A somewhat disconcerting tidbit, however, popped up in Tolle's discussion of being comfortable with uncertainty. He recalls trying to finish up "The Power of Now" when his money began to ran out: "I bought a lottery ticket and won $1,000 which kept me going for another month." Lottery ticket? I guess he's human like the rest of us.
