I received a firstreads winner notification for this book, and roughly 48 hours later it showed up on my doorstep. Definitely hard to argue with the publisher being so on top of it.
I love the premise of this book - who, indeed, has not wanted to escape at one point or another? It's written well, and I appreciate that she didn't take Emily down the somewhat clichéd route of severing all ties and not looking back. I initially expected Emily to end up with a different character than she did, and I love being surprised in books (the caveat being that I want the surprise to be believable, which can be hard to pull off).
The one thing that felt off to me, and which kept me from rating the book higher than I did, is Emily's detachment. Oh, she cries sometimes, and obviously she's not entirely detached if everything's so wrong that she has to run away from her life. Every time she negotiates with her husband after leaving, though, or to her boss, or even to her friends, she is so calm and rational and toneless that I have to wonder where her personality is. She's not always an easy character to like, given her propensity to run when things get difficult and not worry about the pieces she's leaving behind, so more emotion could have made her a more complex character.
Overall, a light, fast read that went well with a plane trip.
