Journey to the Center of the Earth

by Jules Verne
What sounds more adventurous than taking a journey to the center of the earth? Not much can compare. Although this novel is fiction, there is so much detail in the description of the journey and the characters that you are willing to go along with all the impossible trips they make under our lands and oceans and really hope that the characters succeed. Axel, the narrator, is not very excited about taking this trip and believe me, you’ll figure that out right away from the way he narrates. His uncle, Professor Liendenbrock, is the real enthusiast and is so excited to take the trip, he hardly sleeps. Because no one has set out on the journey they are about to undertake, Axel and his uncle hire a Danish guide by the name of Hans to assist them. Hans is a strong person, both intellectually and physically; He is actually the key to their survival.
When the three men first set out to the volcano in Iceland which will lead them to center of the earth, they are excited albeit nervous about their excursion. Will they have enough water and will they be able to withstand the temperatures of the depths? Descending down the crater is easy but soon they are faced with a challenge. There are two passages; which one should they take? The one they choose is actually a dead end. Axel, Hans, and the Professor have to turn back; another three day trip. This time the trip will be made without any water; it is all gone. How will they get water? Is there a spring in the center of the earth? You’ll be surprised at the answers, the places they visit under ground, and the success of their journey. You will not be disappointed with the outcome.
