I read everything this man writes that I can lay my hands on. He’s an opinionated, deeply informed, pungent, pugnacious, provocative and often surprising writer. On these scores, his latest book doesn’t disappoint.

A companion volume to British television series of the same name, this trans-Atlantic historian (he teaches at Harvard and Oxford and this year at the London School of Economics) argues the West grew to world dominance because it embraced competition, the scientific revolution, the rule of law and representative government, modern medicine, a consumer society and the Protestant work ethic. He suggests much of the rest of the world (particularly China) is embracing these same “killer aps,” as he calls them, leading to a relative decline of Western power. The question is whether this relative decline will suddenly turn into a complete collapse, as other once dominant world powers suffered.

Natalie Sure Karl Rove should know as science was such a big party of his failing party's mantra. He with Bush, Cheney et al turned western civilization into a cesspool of religious wackoism. I am a liberal BUT I think Ferguson is fascinating. That Karl Rove does is astounding as his KNOW NOTHING, science eshewing, education disparaging party of idiots nearly singlehandedly destroyed this country. That administration is LOADED with war criminals and those who tossed our beloved Constitution overboard to keep the money and power in the top 1%. I hope you sleep well at night. I am sure you do as sociopaths have NO conscience!

Tom I guess it never occured to you to think that people who disagree with you just, well, disagree, and aren't evil monsters. Grow up already.

Natalie Don't tell me to "grow up" . I feel the way I feel and that bas*&^%$ is a war criminal along with that entire rancid party and Bush administration who NO ONE holds accountable. You think how you think and I think as I do. DO NOT BE INSULTING to me. I don't CARE what you think. I will say what I want. Who are you Rove the Immoral's friend?

BTW you spell "occurred" with TWO R's....They MUST have taught you something in elementary school!

p.s. Forgive my typo: I do KNOW it's "big part of his failing party's mantra." Typos are one thing. Common errors something else. TWO "R's" in occurred!

Tom It's too bad it's immoral to pick on the mentally ill, because this would be the most entertaining flame war ever. On the bright side, we finally have a poster child for getting Bush Derangement Syndrome included in the DSM.

Scott Daniel Amen, Karl, although you should be reading all of your books in an orange jumpsuit for endangering our national security for your role in the Valerie Plame affair. You violates the Intelligence Identities Secrecy Act, and Scooter took the fall for you.

Not to mention your role in poisoning the air of democracy on Fox News...

....can you tell the contempt I have for you as an American?

Hadrian I can't say I agree with all of your policies, Karl, but I'd love to talk books with you.
