Club Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, #3)
by Charlaine Harris
by Charlaine Harris
Still reading this but I have some thoughts I want to put in writing. Even though I enjoy the storyline so far, I am getting thoroughly annoyed with Charliane Harris' lack of writing skills. I understand, that perhaps she's reached the top level of her particular skill set but does she not have an editor?? Is there no one that can say, "hey, two paragraphs about cooking breakfast (you cook the sausage first, to get the fat!!) is NOT RELEVANT OR EVEN REMOTELY INTERESTING!!" If I, as a reader, want to read a cookbook, I WILL! On the upside, if I don't enjoy this book, at least I've received a refresher course on how to season a cast iron skillet! I don't mean to sound harsh. It's just that Harris has a great imagination and I really like the storylines...I can only imagine what this series would be like if she improved her writing skills.
Also, as another reviewer also pointed out, I am sick of reading the same details over and over again. I already know Sookie is a telepath, Bill is a vampire and she can't read his thoughts, Jason is a horndog, Sam is shapeshifter, over and over and over. Half of what I've read thus far has been already been covered, at tedium, in the first two stories. I understand that she wrote so repetitiely so that if a reader reads a book out of order, they can still follow the story. But as a person who started with book 1, I'm SICK OF IT.
At the time that I'm writing this last paragraph, I"m done reading this book but my oringal thoughts still hold true. The storyline, while fun, ties up way too conveniently. I'm tired of reading about Sookie getting the crap beat out of her. I used to think of her as a strong female character but here she gets beaten repeatedly, staked, raped...you name it. If I decide to continue reading this series, it will be for one reason and one reason only: Eric Northman. He's the only intriguing element left in this series.
