Albeit a long and daunting-looking epic, it is a more accessible read than expected. I'm not certain that the English translation conveyed all of the prosaic qualities of the original Russian and in doing so, possibly simplified the text somewhat, but even so, Tolstoy's place in the annals of literary history is well-deserved. You won't find much better.
