Loved this. A series of separate stories that gradually come to be connected, largely through the involvement of the lead character, Jackson Brodie: an ex-cop, now private detective. The stories all involve a murder or a mystery (or both) and each chapter jumps forward or backwards in time and between different points of view. All the characters are well-developed and compelling, as are the mysteries themselves. I like Jackson Brodie as a character and had encountered him before in "A Good Turn", which I am currently re-reading. Coupled with rich observations of grief and relationships, Atkinson's dark humour often had me laughing out loud. A fantastic read.
