I feel somewhat odd about reading this book as it's more of a doorstop of mythic repute than the kind of novel one hears is a must-read. But while entering some books into the database, I came across a Modern Library edition I bought used, and began reading. So far, like so many nineteenth century European Realist works, there is a cast of thousands.

But I finally know who the models for Rocky and Bullwinkle's Boris and Natasha are.
