God, No!: Signs You May Already Be an Atheist and Other Magical Tales
by Penn Jillette
by Penn Jillette
This isn't a timeless work of high literature, nor is it even all that coherent. The nominal theme of the book is an atheist rewriting of the Ten Commandments (which by Jillette's own admission has been done many times before, e.g. George Carlin), but the relationship of his personal anecdotes to each of the "ten suggestions" seems almost coincidental. Yet this was a great book. When I learn something unexpected about someone whose opinion I respect, a cognitive dissonance often creeps in while I try to reconcile my old world view with this new view that *must* be correct, because I've always agreed with them before! Despite being such an atheist hero and a rational thinker, Penn Jillette expresses several ideas that make me think a lot harder about my own little philosophies, ones I'd imagined were on solid rational and moral ground. Oh, and he talks about seared penis flesh and strippers.
I thought this was going to be another one of those books I've been reading lately that preaches to my choir, but I didn't quite hear the sermon I'd expected. Now I have to go think for myself some more. Bastard.
