it was amazing

Martin is a fantastic author, best contemporary fantasy author that I've read in years - hands down (and I'm glad the HBO adaptation didn't soil the books' goodness). Martin is gritty, his world is harsh - like what our own medieval world was. The fantasy elements are barely noticed at first, its a build up. The character development is superb, with characterizations that provide the unique flair one looks for in an epic fantasy. And unlike so many other series of high fantasy, good evil isn't black and white cut and dry (well, sometimes it is in the series, like those beyond the ice wall). All in all, a fantastic read, I eagerly await the rest of the series.
