This goes with The Moviegoer and L'Etranger, and possibly The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, because it's a powerful and pretty accurate evocation of depression or some similar state. McCullers is a crazy good writer, and when I think of how young she was, I just have to stop thinking about that. The voice seems to belong to someone much more old and jaded. I'd recommend this if you like Southern (gothic? I'm not up on my genres) fiction.
