"A sum of money is a leading character in this tale about people, just as a sum of honey might properly be a leading character in a tale about bees."
This was the very first Vonnegut book I ever read, when I was 12 years old. I remember finishing it and thinking to myself "what the hell did I just read?" and promptly turned around and read Slaughterhouse-Five, Welcome to the Monkey House, Cat's Cradle and a bunch of others. I'm not sure if I understand his writing any better as an adult, but that doesn't stop me from reading his books!
The description of the "disease" that one can develop from being too philanthropic is one of my favorite parts of this book. It's also the part that confused me the most as a kid - I guess my sense of irony wasn't well developed!
