I regret that Ann Packer makes this book an either/or choice. After reading it so many times, I'm still struck by the choices that Carrie makes: either potential to do something great, with resources all around her and opportunity to learn more and use her talent, or be the "good" person who gives that all up to make amends. It makes me anxious that she is 23 and commiting herself to being "back," when at that age how can you make those decisions? How can you say that what you decide to do at 23 is what you will want to do when you are 40, or even 30? I don't feel any moral preaching from Packer, but I am always disappointed when I reach the end. It feels to me like a bleak future stretching endlessly ahead of Carrie; even though she will feel good about herself, she will have nothing to offer anyone.
