When his father goes north on a cattle drive, Travis' father leaves his fourteen-year-old son to be the man of the house. Travis feels confident that he can make his dad proud of the way he takes care of his ma and his five-year-old brother, Arliss. At least until a big, rascally yellow dog shows up and starts making a mess of everything. Little does Travis know how important his friendship with Old Yeller will be to surviving until his father comes home.

Old Yeller is a classic animal tale about companionship and growing up. As he struggles to help his family survive, Travis learns what it truly means to become a man.

Old Yeller was a Newbery Honor Book in 1957.
