Not nearly as good as the Alatriste series. The rambling philosophical dialogues (the most annoying of which didn't even bother with quotation marks) detracted from the well-described settings and plot elements. One of the questions raised by the book: are the silent witnesses to evil deeds complicit in those deeds?
