The novel centers on two women in Bombay whose lives are intimately connected yet they exist in two very different worlds. Sera is an upper middle class matriarch who has endured the pain of an abusive marriage. Bhima, the household servant, has lived a life filled with loss. Their stories are interwoven by the closeness of their daily interactions and the many ways in which their families are interconnected. Differences in class are a powerful undercurrent in their understanding of themselves and their relationship. These differences become particularly stark when their daughters become pregnant face very different choices and consequences.

At times, the writing was simply stunning with evocative descriptions and a careful unfolding of the characters' histories. However, the pace of the book slowed at times with most of the story told in retrospect.
