Oliver Tate loves using obscure words. He's worried about his parents' sex life, his girlfriends skin condition, why a schoolmate gets bullied and the possibility of developing a sex life of his own.

If you've ever wondered what it's like to be a fifteen-year-old boy this is about as close as you'll get to finding out. If you've ever been a a fifteen-year-old boy this is reassurance that you weren't entirely weird.

You want to love Oliver but at times you also want to strangle him and the story veers between hilariously funny and surprisingly poignant.

There's a lot to like here but it's not quite the great-British-coming-of-age-novel that the jacket copy would have you believe.
