Cornish created a genre that goes beyond Steampunk...the Foundling series might be classified as "Fleshpunk." This world is similar to Victorian England, but it's not. And the technology is biologically-based. People can have organs implanted in order to give themselves superhuman powers. Machines are run by living tissue. The origin of this technology isn't discussed. Instead, Cornish focuses on world and character building, which is just fine. The Half-Continent is extraordinary, and Rossamund, our hero, seems flat at first but becomes endearing.
