I read this book years ago and enjoyed it, so when I needed something light for RAGBRAI reading last week decided to take it along. I have liked most of Joe Haldeman's work very much..he tells great stories but writes in a simple, straight forward, minimalist fashion. This book is a collection of three short stories (novella's?) about assignments of an "interplanetary secret agent" who has been "programmed" to do things contrary to his religious beliefs. This secondary theme has little to do with most of the stories but does provide a stage for transitions from one story to the next. Haldeman has used the pacifist turned warrior/agent theme (and carried it off well) in other works such Mindbridge and The Forever War.
