Zora Neale Hurston's research on African-American folklore manages to come to life in Their Eyes Were Watching God. Lyrical, uplifting, and often funny, Their Eyes Were Watching God delivers a strong message about basic human rights. I could appreciate Janie Crawford's desire and determination to not spend her life poor and downtrodden, but I can't say I was much of a fan of the men she chose to have by her side. Still, the ending really packed a punch and made the characters much more memorable to me than I feel they would have been otherwise.
