Although I purchased this book for my pre-teen daughter, I frequently read "her" books as well, just to keep an eye on what she's reading and I am so glad that I picked this up. The stories of Bella, Jane and Yetta are compelling and heartbreaking, and while I knew of the tragedy of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, and even some of the issues surrounding the event, Haddix brought to life the unknown faces of the women who died that day. Being a native New Yorker, the last line of the author's note was especially chilling and poignant:

"I was able to look out the windows where the workers jumped or fell and see exactly how far down it was and hear how NYU employees stood in that same spot on September 11, 2001 watching as people fell from the World Trade Center. At that moment, the Triangle fire didn't seems very long ago at all."

I sobbed through the last few chapters...
