My second read of a Sarah Vowell book and it was less entertaining than Assassination Vacation. No less informative but she seemed less excited about her foray into the Puritan world.
And maybe I was less excited too. I suppose I couldn't get over my cynicism of the founding of our country and perhaps I enjoy looking at all of that as a blur. With the American way, it seems like you're not allowed to pick and choose what you would like to be your history. But these were not my stories or even stories I might be interested in. With Assassination Vacation, what those presidents were doing before they died was important and the effects of their deaths seemed to snowball immediately. Puritan life moved slowly through history. And the book read as such.
