This was my seventh Paul Auster novel. I started reading TRAVELS IN THE SCRIPTORIUM, because I wanted something short by Auster to read between my other novels. (I read Auster books in-between other books like one eats a palate cleanser in-between courses at a French restaurant.) SCRIPTORIUM is uniquely Auster: an original plot that teases the reader. The serious Auster fan will delight in the references to Auster's prior work; the reader new to Auster will get a different viewpoint, maybe a confused one. In fact, I wonder if I would have enjoyed the book more had I been more familiar with Auster's other works.
