Meltha In the long-standing tradition of textbooks that release a "new, improved" edition every couple years so the price on the used copies can never get too low or dig too deeply into the pockets of the publishers, here comes edition 9 of Strategies. What's different? They moved three chapters to a new spot (I never teach in the order the book is written in anyway, so this was a complete non-event), moved one graphic on the thesaurus so that it's actually in the section that discusses it (a mistake they didn't catch in the last two versions), and changed a few of the readings, keeping about 80% of them. They also removed the previous student essays and replaced them with new student essays. Yup, that's right, except for the most ridiculous cosmetic changes, the vast majority of the new material in this text was written not by the writers or even the editors, but by students. But that's not all! They also removed all the sections on APA and MLA documentation (the rules have been revamped recently, and I suppose removing it was easier than updating it), all the grammar sections have been taken away (again, don't particularly care since it was awful to begin with and I always used another text), and, oh yes, the instructor's edition had all the annotations stripped. Nice. It's about half the size now. I hope for the students' sake that the price is similarly halved.
