Page turner. I couldn't stop reading this book and fortunately, I was able to read it very quickly without too many interruptions. I would recommend it for middle school age children and up. It's quite violent for a children's book. I agree with other people's comments that the prologue was fabulous--and after reading it I thought the book would make a good read-aloud. I wish that the level of writing found in the prologue had continued throughout (though the rest of the book was well written too). Near the end of the book, I found Mathias's energy level unbelievable. Very interesting story, unusual characters, and unusual ending. The illustrations by Gary Blithe were notable too--excellent additions to the text. It's a unique find among the books I have read.
