Heard a book discussion and an interview with the author on NPR, and the book sounded interesting. It’s a collection of short stories by Bulgarian writer who lives in the U.S. The stories are about Bulgaria and its history, and they tend to be nostalgic and melancholic. The Communist past of Bulgaria is a strong element in the stories. No getting away from Communism for the current generation of Eastern European writers, I guess. Penkov wrote the stories in English.
