I love Ann Tyler. With a career spanning nearly 50 years, she has delighted readers with her quirky characters and unconventional story lines. Digging to America is no different. The novel focuses on the international adoptions of two Korean girls by two different families, one an Iranian-American family and the other an American apple-pie as you can get family. The families meet on the day their girls arrive at the airport in Baltimore and begin a tradition of spending the girls’ “arrival day” together each year. The novel follows the Yazdan and Donaldson families from when their daughters first arrive in America until they are seven. This delightful novel touches on themes of the immigrant experience in America, parenting practices, and friendship.
