Fade Away by Harlan Coben

If you like basketball and if you like mysteries with clever plots, this one's for you. Myron Bolitar has a dream come true--at 35, after a career ending knee injury 10 years before, he is signed to an NBA team. Of course he's there to try to find out what happened to one of the team members who has taken a powder. Coben constructs an intricate plot which is gradually unfurled, and at the end he ties up all the loose ends. Myron learns a lot about himself and his life choices, as well as finding out who he can trust and who really loves him. The pace is as fast as an NBA game, with lots of jokes, some more successful than others. The characters are painted with broad strokes: playboy bunnies, sports groupies, spoiled superstars, female wrestlers. But for an evening's entertainment, it's a slam dunk.
