This was one of the most tiresome Historical Fiction books I have ever had to read through in 30 yrs. I even tried to give it a chance past 40 pages & hoped it could engage the reader... and so on I persevered through the 484 pages of just copious amounts of dry facts & boring subject matter. I never felt the emotional depth or contact to any of the characters and so couldn't care less what had happened to them even in turmoil..so sad no capable response could be elicited by much in this story. I found the supposed great love story between these two people was mostly highlighted by only sexual intimacies suggested and at times i found bordered on "smut" soft porn scenes that are projected upon us in this day & age by all media. If the author can only try to convey true devotional love by mostly sexual suggestion (only because they had some 14 children) runs pathetically short of elevating Love to it's highest truth =this was just titillation to the state projected (expected ?)of our society & times???? The way the characters spoke i found was not efficient to make me think this is taking place in the past and their thought processes not equal to their "station" nor age in life. Perhaps a great amount of research went into this but "that is about all" as the rest is only an "attempt" to write as i will never pick up a book by this author again. I suggest you DO NOT WASTE your precious life & time to this book and find something much more worthy & enjoyable to read. I will stop with the endless commentary of how bad this book is.. as there is much more and i won't waste your time needlessly either.Save your money and buy many of the better historical fiction authors!!!

Johannah Gage I absolutely agree. I enjoy historical fiction books but this one was not intriguing at all. I put it down after less than a chapter.
