A whole lot of issues -- teen identity and self-awareness, race, class, sexual orientation, teen pregnancy and sex ed, alcoholism, divorce, mental illness, adoption, adoption coercion -- and yet so little didacticism. I must have read this when it first came out, but I still remember being fascinated and somewhat baffled by it as a young teen. It's a great book for younger readers, I think.
