Well-written novel about black culture and the desire of a woman to have a daughter. The abuse she suffered as a child leads her to a place where she believes she can create what she needs. Without thought for what the future holds, she blackmails the midwife into playing her game of pretending that the boy child she give birth to is really a girl. The far reaching implications of the deception never occur to her until it is far too late. When the ruse is revealed the entire family suffers.
