Read from August 03 to 08, 2011

Let me first say that the first half of this book deserves 3 stars. I really enjoyed the setting even though I still don't quite understand why the world is the way it is. Annie, Scarlet, Natty, Leo, and Win were all great characters in the beginning. I felt like the story moved along pretty well and that things were really going to get good with Annie's mafia family background. Unfortunately the second half of the book did not deliver at least for me anyway. I got tired of waiting for the action to start and by the last stretch of the book I just wanted it to be over.
The plot is basically about a girl, Annie, who is trying to keep her family together and safe after her Father who was the mob boss dies. The drug here is chocolate which I found a little weird but this is a YA book so I can understand why something like chocolate would be used as opposed to an actual drug. Annie has to care for her younger sister Natty, her older brother Leo who was hurt physically and mentally after their mom died, and her Grandmother who is falling fast away. Annie's mob family is of concern to her because they have recruited Leo to help them out and Annie doesn't want anybody in her little family to end up like her parents. So the story begins with her trying to keep her family together and keep her life as normal as possible.
When the book focused on the mafia part I really enjoyed it, but when the author would switch to the normal everyday problems of a 16 year old I got bored. I would have loved to have known more about her family and what they did behind the scenes. If you are looking for a mob type YA book check out Holly Blacks White Cat.

Tatiana First impressions?

Crystal I haven't started it yet lol. I have some stuff going right now so I probably won't get to it until this weekend =)

Nic Crystal, I think I am going to start this on the weekend too :)

Crystal Yea! We can read it together! I am probably going to start on Sunday night =)

~Tina~ Oo...2stars? I'm guessing it wasn't good then? =(

Crystal No I ended up really disliking it =( I wasn't a fan of this authors other book so I am guessing she is just not for me. I am going to write my review tonight. I am curious what Nic will think.

message 7: by ~Tina~ (new)

~Tina~ Aww sorry to hear that:( Oh well, at least you tried:)

message 8: by Alexa (new) - added it

Alexa Sorry you didn't like it. :(
Hmm..will I like it?

Crystal Thanks Tina =)

Alexa I really don't know. I felt like the author focused way too much on the romance and the whole should I have sex thing (the main character is Catholic) instead of the mafia stuff. I also didn't care for the main character by the end of the book. I really enjoyed the mafia bit even though it was a little weird that the contraband was chocolate. I also wish that the reasoning behind this new world would have been given...that doesn't help at all lol. Have you read the authors other books??

message 10: by Alexa (new) - added it

Alexa I haven't read her other books.
Catholic, huh? (view spoiler)[Does it sound like it's stereotyping Catholics and/or does the book focus on her religion a lot? (hide spoiler)]

Crystal (view spoiler)[ No there isn't any stereotyping. Annie (the main character) is trying to be a good Catholic girl because of the whole mafia family ordeal and when she finds a boyfriend that faith is tested. It is brought up quite a bit and I found myself saying "okay I get it let's move on" I can see where her religion wouild play a part in this book but enough was enough. (hide spoiler)]
I had the same problems with Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac as I am having with this book.

message 12: by Nic (last edited 08. August, 15:28 Uhr) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nic Oh no Crystal. I am really liking it but I am only 80 pages in. I like the whole mafia in the future thing. Although know I am bit worried about the rest of the book....

Crystal You might like it Nic, don't let my rating scare you =) I really hope you do =)

message 14: by Nomes (new)

Nomes Crystal, I have read two book by Zevin : the teenage amnesiac one and elsewhere.

Both had awesome concepts/plots, but for some reason I felt zero connection to the characters. Didn't care about them at all. It was weird, as I couldn't pinpoint why and was wondering if it was just a personal thing with me and this author?

Crystal Nope I agree with you completely. I read Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac and I couldn't get into it at all. I agree the plot was awesome but the characters just couldn't pull the story along. This one has the same problems. I also thought she focused too much on the romance just like her previous books. I wanted way more mafia stuff.

message 16: by Nomes (new)

Nomes normally i don't mind romance, but it is not gabrielle's strong point as a writer, IMO. in her two books, i didn't feel any swoon/chemistry in her romantic sub-plots.

I am not going to read this one, but i am curious to see what others think ...

Alexa @Crystal: Ah, okay. I'll stay on the tour & see what I think. :)
So... Did you write in it? ;)
(I'm trying to decide whether or not I should write in an ARC that I'm not completely loving. I'm so tempted, but if I let others read it, I wonder if they'll get annoyed by my lil complaints... hehe)

Crystal I agree Nomes, she should stick with the plot.

@Alexa Oh I hope you stay on the tour! I don't want to discourage anybody from reading it. LOL yes I wrote in it. I really liked the first half so my comments are good until the last part and then I tried not to make too many that were rants. I really like writing in them and I just focused on the positive since everybody will be reading it =) I am going to write my final thoughts about it at the end though. Which book are you not liking?? I wouldn't be bothered by a comment that I didn't agree with so I think you should write away girl =)

message 19: by Alexa (new) - added it

Alexa lol! Would it be okay if we ranted a lil or do you not want that? I mean, I'm not sure what I'm going to think, but just in case... :D

The book I'm reading is The Probability of Miracles. All the reviews I've read are positive, but I'm not quite feeling it yet. It could just be me though. I'm still hoping I end up loving it. And I want to write in it, but if no one wants to read it on tour then I don't want to do that 'cuz I don't want to be the only one to have written in it. ^^;;
I don't know...maybe I should go ahead & write anyway. I already have over a page of stuff written down. :p lol

message 20: by Arlene (new)

Arlene Oh no! Two stars??? Okay, should I stay on the tour Crystal? Do you think I'll like it?

Crystal @Alexa Oh please rant away! =P I think it will be hilarious to read all the ranting comments LOL! I might go back and add a few since I really didn't comment too much at the end and I think everybody will understand my rants haha. Are you touring that one? If you are I would love to read it and make ranting comments with you =) I know what you mean though I don't know if I would want to write in a book that nobody else is going to read lol. I am so glad that you still want to read mine haha!

@Arlene I really don't think you will like it =( We agree on a lot of books and I have a feeling that what bothers me will bother you in this one. You can always give it a try though just in case I am wrong. Plus it might be worth it to just read all the funny comments hehe =)

message 22: by Alexa (last edited 09. August, 05:36 Uhr) (new) - added it

Alexa I'll tour it if anyone wants to read it. So, I guess I am now! :D I went back & added my comments, and I realized they weren't as negative as I thought! lol I seem to be poking fun at things more than anything. XD And the strange thing is that I seem to be enjoying it more now that I'm writing in it. It makes me want to keep reading. hehe

Crystal Yes I want to see all the rants lol! You know I understand completely! I don't know how I would have thought about this one had I not been touring it. I think I looked at all the positive things in the beginning and then thought well they will understand lol. It was fun ranting though and I have to say that I am a little excited to see how we all comment when we don't like something. That is of course if anybody feels the same way I did lol. Watch you all love this one =P

Tatiana This chocolate as drug thing is just strange...

Crystal I agree T. I still don't understand why it was chocolate.

Flannery Yeah, the chocolate thing is really bizarre. It would just never happen. Is this set in the future or something?

message 27: by Arlene (new)

Arlene Okay, this one should be interesting. :) Thanks for touring it Crystal.

message 28: by Lora (new) - added it

Lora Flannery wrote: "Yeah, the chocolate thing is really bizarre. It would just never happen. Is this set in the future or something?"

It is set in 2083.

Flannery Ahh, that makes more sense now. Though it is still weird to me that chocolate may become such a hot commodity. (I have seen documentary-type stuff about how this is possible but I'm not sure how seriously I can take it in a book, you know?)

message 30: by Nic (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nic Flannery wrote: "Yeah, the chocolate thing is really bizarre. It would just never happen. Is this set in the future or something?"

It is just banned in the US. It feels like when alcohol was banned in 1920's. It has a bootleg trade.

Crystal Arlene you are very welcome! I wish it was as good as Lola, but maybe next month I will have something funner =)

I laughed so many times when the mafia would talk about the chocolate trade. Like you all said I can see all the banning and bootleg stuff but I think she could have come up with a better substance. They had all kinds of rationing going on.

Nic did you feel old reading it? They kept making references to things that are current for us and I just felt so old!!

message 32: by Nic (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nic Hmmm it does feel a little youthful. I guess we are the Grandma in this story :)

Tatiana I totally see now what you were saying about the 2nd part. The story is getting stagnant.

Crystal Good to know I am not the only one =)

Flannery Your comments in the book cracked me up. I totally agreed with them all. "When is something going to happen?" "I don't think I like this very much." LOL

Crystal lol I couldn't help it =P I can't wait to read what you wrote XD
