As self-lacerating as the earlier and later volumes, Coetzee really seems to have very little sympathy for his younger self, his pretensions, his lack of worldliness, antipathy towards other people, social clumsiness and sometimes outright cruelty towards others. Excellent, but neither this nor the earlier volume can quite hold a candle to part 3 (Summertime).
