Eddie is a kid whose brain moves so fast that he doesn't usually finish things because he's too busy starting something new. When his father is killed by an exploding tire at his garage Eddie discovers the body and when his best friend, Billy, is killed three weeks later by some falling wallboard, Eddie discovers this body too. But Billy's spirit hangs around to help Eddie deal with an extremely right wing religious school board that wants to ban a book that Eddie feels tells the truth and Eddie finds a way to fight. Crutcher has done an excellent job of illustrating the fight against bullying, censorship, and racism.
