Ok, so one thing I love about this book is the way the author plays with her prose. In fact, I wouldn't even call it prose, I would call it a theme park of words. But it's not too dense or whimsical. It's very readable. And the meaning and depth isn't cheapened by frilly nonsense.

Another reason to love this book is the characters. The main character and her band of merry men are all very touching in their own way. They each have their struggle, which is reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz, only less obviously allegorical. Instead, each struggle speaks more to the climate of Fairyland or of the characters themselves. Even characters that we only come into contact with for a chapter or two, are distinct.

The world is a treat to read about as well. Less goofy than Willy Wonka. More beautiful and creative than Oz or many other Fairylands written of in literature. It touches the senses. All five of them. Plus it tickles a little something extra in the heart. It made me want to be a child again without really being a book solely for children.

The twist at the end of the book was unexpectedly clever. That's all I have to say about that.

Who I would recommend this book to? Anyone who loves stories or characters with big hearts and strong backbones. Any girl who needs more ideas for make believe when she's outside playing. Any family looking for something to read to their children and then talk over. Any adult who likes to collect quirky and beautiful little novels.

Oh yeah, and the pictures were exquisite.

I'll be remembering this one.
