** spoiler alert ** An alien race visits Earth, proves to everyone that there is no God, that all of Man's religions are false, and then goes on to explain that Humanity was never 'meant' to colonize the stars and that a sort-of occult-based pantheism is the one true religion and that humanity was 'meant' to become 'one' with the cosmic consciousness. Interesting. No wonder Clark put a disclaimer at the beginning of the book stating that these were not his personal beliefs. Whatever.
