Though not an autobiography as such, author Tom Franklin has incorporated many vignettes of his own life and experiences into this novel, written painstakingly over a period of several years. The character development is great, the story is heart-wrenching at times, and the plot is very well handled. There are occasional metaphors that are sparsely scattered throughout, but most of the writing is straightforward with appropriate slang written phonetically in an easy to read style. A mixed genre, the book mixes racism, murder, friendship and dysfunctional characters in a fine blend of fiction. This is one of the best novels I've read in quite a while.
