** spoiler alert ** I found Shopgirl to be an overall sweet love story. The growth, transformation, and the relationship between the characters (Mirabelle, and Ray Porter)is the driven force of this novel that kept me interested. I enjoyed how their relationship changed during the course of the novel, and the fact that Ray Porter wasn't able to redeem himself.
The things I didn't enjoy was Jeremy's transformation as a character. He suddenly re-enters Mirabelles' life again, out of the blue. It was as though the author himself got too lazy or bored to dive into the details of Mirabelle's and Jeremy's love story towards the end.
I found his prose a bit too rushed during the latter parts - also, a bit too slow during the beginnings of this novel.
Despite all of this, the story touched me.
So, Kudos to Steve Martin. :)
