it was amazing

This was my first Kay book, but it will not be my last. And I'm giving it 5 stars not because it is a perfect book - it has truly been picked apart by many reviewers on goodreads - but because it is so beautiful. It's one of those books that stays with you for a long time as you ponder the events and characters and their choices. I don't dispute many of the complaints other reviewers list for Under Heaven, but for me it just hit perfectly that balance between epic and intimate, sweeping historical events and quiet contemplation. I loved the characters, the narration, the setting, and the "feel" of the story. I'm glad I listened to it as an audiobook since it forced me to slow down and savor the lyrical prose instead of rushing to wrap up the suspenseful elements. I loved the fairly long epilogue, which truly brought closure to the story and left me with chills.
