I didn't know what to expect when I picked up The Radleys by Matt Haig. Yes it was a vampire novel but you could tell from the very first page it was going somewhere different. The Radleys are your typical middle class british family. The dad, Peter is a doctor, the mum Helen goes to book club and the two teenagers Clara and Rowan are seemingly average students. What the parents haven't told the children is that they are vampires. Clara finds out on Friday night when she is attacked and does the only thing she can do to defend herself. The book takes place over this weekend and deals with the consequences of finding out. It is a novel about failed dreams, long buried secrets and finding out who you want to be. The fact that they are vampires is almost incidental to the storyline. An excellent Sunday read.
